Good SQL knowledge is essential for developing performant and scalable SQL database solutions.
Writing raw SQL isn't as common as it used to be ten years ago due to O/R mappers and LINQ but it's still invaluable to know what's going on under the hood in order to create performant and scaleable applications.
Even using LINQ, I quite often find myself calling ToString() on the ObjectQuery to check the generated SQL.
